NamPower Deploys 315 MVA, 400 kV Transformer to Gerus Substation (March 2026)
NamPower has successfully transported and installed a massive 315 MVA, 400 kV power transformer at its Gerus Substation near Otjiwarongo, restoring full grid capacity after a 7-year refurbishment. Weighing 175 tonnes, the unit traveled 1,900 km via the Trans-Kalahari Corridor from South Africa’s Eskom Rotek Industries. Frans Shanyata, NamPower’s Engineering Services Senior Manager, called the transformer “a cornerstone of Namibia’s energy security,” enabling stable power distribution to mining, agriculture, and residential sectors. The upgrade strengthens cross-border power trade links with Botswana and South Africa.
